Tulln-Langenlebarn 1968

Tulln-Langenlebarn 1968

THL

Description

CIRCUIT HISTORY

Tulln-Langenlebarn was a 2.9 km long, temporary airfield circuit in Lower Austria, hosting a round of the European Formula Two championship from 1967 to 1971 as well as races of Formula Vees, sports cars and motorbikes.

The track was three kilometers away from "garden city" or "city of roses", Tulln, one of the oldest towns in Austria, and situated on the flat land between Danube river and the foothills of the European Alps, the Wienerwald. You can see Tulln with its two-towered church from turn 1 (on the right). The winner’s trophy was the so-called "golden rose of the Tullner field". Austrias capital Vienna was not more than 25 (straight) kilometers away, in fact it is right behind the prominent mountain range.
The town north of the track is Langenlebarn, affectionately called "Lale" by locals and insiders.

The track ran clockwise, counting seven corners, with right hand corners dominating (ratio 5:2). With a width of 12 m or greater and a 1.1-kilometer main straight made up of the concrete runway of the airfield, the circuit allowed thrilling races side by side and offered best overtaking opportunities. Due to the location in the flat Tullner field – the circuit had no clearly visible elevation changes – and the quite bumpy main straight, some press reporters named it "washboard". It was one of the slower circuits in the F2 calendar with an average speed similar to Chrystal Palace or Vallelunga.

With the newly built Salzburgring and Österreichring in 1969, Langenlebarn lost its importance and became obsolete.

Today
The military airfield is still in use. Langenlebarns small but renowned school for aeronautics is, in its form, unique in Europe. Since 2023 a Black Hawk helicopter fleet has its home in hangar IV at former turn 2.
In summer 2024 a massive flood hit the region and the helicopters had their first major operation, saving a lot of lives.
THE RACES 1968

Date: 14/7/1968
Spectators: 30.000
Organizer: ÖAMTC
Race distance: 2 x 35 laps (heat 1 at 2:15 p.m., heat 2 at 4 p.m.)
Pole position: Jochen Rindt (Brabham BT23C-Ford) 1m 3.27 s

After some confusion (because of the skipping of the warm-up lap), heat one was characterized by an electrifying duell between Rindt and Beltoise. Nearly every round the lead changed.
Further incidents: Bell hit one of the straw balls, Hill ran into it, so Hill got out of the car, removed the straw and continued the race. Another three cars got seriously damaged in turn 5.
Rindt won, Beltoise finished second, Pescarolo third.

The break between the two F2 races was used for a Formula Vee and a touring car race, the latter with a young Niki Lauda in a red Porsche 911. It was one of his very first races. Winner of the Formula Vee race was none other than Dr. Helmut Marko, the future head of Red Bull motorsport.

Same podium results in heat 2 of F2: Rindt first, Beltoise second, Pescarolo third.
